Balancing the Solar with the Lunar

One woman I’ve worked with closely for many years owns a company in the hospitality industry. When she first came to me, the business was wearing on her. She socially and regularly drank as part of her job, was experiencing mood swings and poor sleep, and was noticing her overall inspiration to participate in life dwindle. My first recommendation was that she shift to a more plant-based diet as a way to alkalize the acidity of too much fire, from a stressful lifestyle and lots of alcohol, meat, cheese, and other rich foods. I also suggested she stop drinking alcohol completely, to help cleanse her body and give her overworked liver a break. The liver holds anger, the emotion of fire. When the liver is under stress, it can cause imbalances in emotions. I recommended she try blue lotus as a tea to help her relax and feel more creative at night. She also used CBD and GABA to help her turn off her active brain and sleep, rather than drinking alcohol to shut off her overstimulated brain.

Regarding plant medicines, she had expressed interest in microdosing with psilocybin mushrooms. Microdosing is a gentler way to feel a connection to the psychoactive plant medicines. In our solar, doing-obsessed world, it has come to be considered a “performance-enhancing” practice—because it helps open new neural pathways, connecting us to our intuition and creativity. But this is deceptive; using the medicines in this way actually serves to slow us down and connect us more deeply to the present moment and our intuition. Yes, we might have better ideas under the influence of sub-perceptual doses of psychedelics, but we won’t necessarily “get more done.” I think it can be used in context with intentional practice rather than purely to optimize. I see them more as integrative than generative, although in slowing us down they help create new neural pathways and can be emotionally healing.

For this woman, I felt that microdosing would support her, along with her daily practices of spending time in nature, doing yoga, and connecting with art. These activities are more yin—meaning feminine, regenerative, or Moon-centered—and so they helped her bring balance to her fiery yang, masculine lifestyle of doing and being productive. Microdosing can nourish the soil for the seeds of consciousness we’ve planted in deeper journeywork and can support the integration of psychedelic experiences. It can also help one create the space within to step back and observe one’s patterns and choose to respond differently if needed. Patterns of emotional reactivity are a sign of overreliance on the Sun, as a build-up of unacknowledged emotions can be overwhelming when there is no lunar release valve.

I also guided this woman in a lunar fast, during which she consumed only juice and light teas over four days while tapping into the four elements and the archetypal energies they represent. The purpose of fasting is to learn to transcend our desires, which are often driven by the subconscious mind
